Fun Games Like Age of Empires

Age of Empires is a great real time strategy game that featured so many civilizations that you can use. I am going to introduce you some other games that have some similar features to the Age of Empires series.

In case you didn't know, Age of Empires has an online version that is exactly like the single player ones. The cool part about it is that you have a capital city even when you are logged off. They did some additional features that you can do in the online version:

• Ability to craft items
• Trading with other players

Similar to the offline versions, you get to control different civilizations. There are 6 civilizations in the game:

• Greeks - Most balanced military
• Egyptians - Owns powerful war elephants
• Celts - Has the best naval units
• Persians - Has powerful calvary units
• Norse - Has useful mobile storehouses
• Babylonians - Gung ho units

This game is probably going to be your favorite once you play it. However, if you do not like it as much, you can move on to...

The series started of in 1995. The plot started in the near future, where countries are fighting over a mysterious resource known as the Tiberuim. This game is real time strategy as well, where you control large forces with the goal of annihilating your enemy.

They have many expansions and variations of the game. Here is the list:

• Command & Conquer
• Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun
• Command & Conquer 3: Tiberian Wars
• Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight

Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight received mixed reviews from fans due to their deviation from traditional gameplay. There is also the Red Alert series, which in my opinion is my favorite. The Red Alert series focuses on World War II, where Albert Einstein built a time machine and stopped Adolf Hitler from starting World War II. While that happened, the Soviet Union started an invasion. Basically, you get to see a variation of World War II.

They had 3 series:

• Command & Conquer: Red Alert
• Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2[Expansion is Yuri's Revenge]
• Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3

Having played all 3, I personally enjoyed the old school first C & C Red Alert. Although the graphics weren't top notch, the gameplay was great.

This game is also developed by Ensemble Studios, the same developer for Age of Empires. Similar to the Age of Empires, you get to tackle lengthy campaigns that feature Greek, Norse and Egyptian mythology.

Each group has their own God, such as Odin and Zeus. You advance through 4 different ages, starting off with the Archaic Age. You then proceed to Classical Age, Heroic Age and then Mythic Age. You get to choose a "minor god" every time you advance to the next Age.

Unlike Age of Empires' multiple campaigns, there is only central campaign in Age of Mythology, allowing you to focus on just one.

Well this one definitely made it to the list, because it is an awesome real time strategy game. Not only is it popular, it has a lot of units that you can use to form a good army to counter enemy forces. Blizzard has always made games that can be played for a long time, and Starcraft 2 is no exception.

In Starcraft 2, the story continues as Jim Raynor decides to carry on his journey for freedom against the Terran Dominion lead by Arcturus Mengsk, the guy that abandoned Sarah Kerrigan, allowing the Zerg to infest her into the current "Queen of Blades".

There is a lot more new units and strategies compared to Starcraft 1. If you feel overwhelmed by it, I highly suggest you play Starcraft 1 if you haven't already. That will get you familiar with the story as well as the units.

This is a very popular real time strategy game like Age of Empires that was developed by Huge Big Games. You get to choose from 18 different civilizations and lead them through the different stages of history.

In this game, you can only build your buildings close to your own territory. There are plenty of units in Rise of Nations. You get to use units from the ancient age all the way to the information age. Each civilization has their own unique units. The British has longbow men, Germans have leopard tanks and Russians have T-80 tanks and so on.

With such a large variety of units, players can customize their army to their own liking, allowing different types of playing styles. This is why some games are so addicting due to this factor. All the games mentioned so far have this factor. That is why they are popular.

An RTS game that developed by Stainless Steel Studios in 2001. The game has a lot of similarities to Age of Empires.

Two of the cool features they implemented in this game is the "moral" factor and special "heroes". Your army's statistics is directly affected by morale. Heroes can aid the army in battle, either by healing or increasing/decreasing morale.

Instead of advancing an age for better units and technology, it is called Epochs. They have a long line of advancement, which I will list down here:

With so many different ages and advancements, wouldn't you want to play it?

Of course, we cannot leave this out because it is epic. I personally enjoyed Warcraft 3 the best, having played all 3. The reason why I enjoyed it is because of Dota(Defense of the Ancients). Just like Age of Empires, they are RTS games.

In Warcraft 3, you get to choose between Humans, Orcs, Night Elves and the Undead. Each race has their own strength and weaknesses. The Orcs are brute strength class that focuses more on physical attacks rather than magical. The Undead are masters of raising the dead, making it formidable and forming large armies in a short amount of time. They are similar to the Zerg of Starcraft, where they prefer quantity over quality.

You also get to build heroes in this one as well, where each hero has skills to aid the army. They can join the army in the front lines or stay in the back, depending on your play style.

All the above games like Age of Empires all have one thing in common, which is plenty of different units. That allows for flexible army combinations. That is why all the games mentioned are fun to play. Give them a try!
